Automatic access point selection based on signal strength

It is convenient that Windows XP - yes I still use this system and I am only playing with the Windows 7 release candidate at the moment -  allows us to store the settings plus passwords for the wireless access points we regularly use. I also appreciate the ability to store a ranking - like which access point the system will attempt to connect to first.

However, what is the point of this ranking when the software does not take the signal strength of the access point into consideration? What good does it do when my computer always connects me to the access point in the top of the list while the second one might be much closer by and could provide me with a much better connection?

Please, make use of all the data and come up with a smart ranking of wireless access points instead of just a static one!
